If you are anything like me, you might understand how trying to decide where to go for breakfast is like those times where you are standing in front of your cupboard full of clothes, with an equally large pile of rejected clothes lying rather sadly where they were dropped, because quite simply, you have absolutely nothing to wear. I realise any of the male species reading this may not understand this one, seeing that for the most part you just grab whatever shirt and pant combination is nearest to you; so for you guys just know that this feeling can be translated into something a bit more like that shelf full of xbox or PS-whatever-number-you-have games but, quite simply, you have absolutely nothing to play.
So… here is my list of the best breakfast spots in Cape Town. It began as a highly contested and selectively chosen bucket list written down during lectures when I should have been taking notes on Charles Dickens and Great Expectations. Although this list’s beginning may be a little bit suspect, I promise you the list itself isn’t.
1. Skinny Legs & All, Loop Street
If you feel like a healthy, peaceful breakfast then Skinny Legs & All is for you. This place is like a little haven for me. Try their raw muesli with fruit, and their cloudy mint, lemon and ginger juice. It will change your life a little bit.
2. Bootlegger Coffee Company, Seapoint
If you haven’t been to Bootlegger yet, you really should. It’s vibe, edgy and always full of people. Their coffee is delicious and there is something on the menu for everyone. Their Eggs Benedict is incredible as are all of their fresh juices. You’ll want to come back here to try their non-breakfast food, which I highly recommend.

3. NU, Seapoint and Greenpoint
You will instantly feel healthier just for walking into NU. This is the place to go for healthy, quality food and it is every-single-type-of-food-allergy-you-can-imagine friendly. Try their gluten-free banana bread, protein flapjacks or any single one of their smoothies. If you are the littlest bit indecisive on a good day, prepare yourself and allow extra time for decision-making because this will be your worst nightmare in the best possible way.
4. Superette, Woodstock Exchange
One of my regular go-to’s for a delicious breakfast. Well priced, amazing quality and they never disappoint. Besides, they serve orange and pomegranate juice in a beaker.. I mean… what more can you actually ask for in this alt world we live in now.

5. Truth, Buitenkant Street
Truth is great for rainy days or days when you can’t look at direct sunlight. Both of these situations call for delicious breakfast and amazing coffee – both of which you will find here. Besides, Truth has made someone’s list of the top 10 coffee shops in the world, so it really should make yours at some point.
6. Jason Bakery, Bree Street
Go there if you enjoy being tortured by delicious looking, tasting, smelling pastries and croissants. It’s always so full of people that you might have to eat your breakfast standing up, but you’re so trendy for being there, it all tastes the same anyway and hey, YOLO.

7. Red Sofa Cafe, Vredehoek
According to the boyfriend with the hulk-sized appetite “Best Benedict Ever”. He gets quite grumpy when we go anywhere else. If that’s not your thing then the yoghurt, fruit and seeds option is great too.
9. Starlings, Belvedere road
I basically should have bought shares in Starlings last year I went there so often. If you don’t know it’s there you will drive right past it, it is honestly one of the best hidden gems in Cape Town. Go back there as many times as it takes to try everything on the menu, or stay long enough to have lunch too, it’s all amazing.
10. Four and Twenty, Wynberg
This is the perfect place if you are in the mood for somewhere pretty and girly. Their food is both of those things as well as yummy and delicious. Try their Eggs Be Lean which involves an aubergine roti and a healthier take on hollandaise sauce (I know, right), or their coconut muesli. If they have cheesecake, order a slice of that too for an incredible treat.
