Superette is one of the best places to eat a delicious, healthy breakfast in Cape Town and their location in the Woodstock Exchange adds just enough of an edge to make you feel like you are really in a Cape Town foodie spot. They offer Deluxe and Rosetta Coffee and I have no idea what they do to their rye bread but it is absolutely delicious.
“I judge a restaurant by the bread and the coffee”
– Burt Lancaster.
I might not have any idea who Burt Lancaster is and I am strongly resisting the urge to Google him right now, but he is definitely onto something with this quote of his. When it comes to restaurants I must admit that I share Burt’s judging criteria, except for the addition of my weird obsession with light fixtures. Personal odd eccentricities aside Superette is doing pretty well on my coffee, bread and light fittings scale and that’s before we even get to their food.
My personal favorite is Superette’s version of Boiled Eggs & Soldiers and if you are not an eggy person their muesli is also a great bet. Their portions are generous so you are not going to leave hungry, but if you are one of those people who needs more than 2 eggs on their benedict I have it on the chef’s authority that “it looks great with more eggs” even though it will be an unusual request.
While social norms to do with time are a little bit of a foreign concept in Cape Town at best, Superette is one of those places that doesn’t even try and pretend that a “normal” time exists on Saturdays with their all-day breakfast menu . This is great if you are one of those people who wants to sneak in a run or hit the gym (boet) before your breakfast, but don’t want to have to get up too early to make breakfast, or if you squeaked some takkie a little bit too enthusiastically on Friday night. They also manage to sneak some delicious greens onto their breakfast plate, either in the form of lemony dressed rocket or thin strips of zucchini which look so appealing that they do all the ‘eat-your-greens’ convincing for you. In terms of lunch, they offer a salad-plate, which means that you get a selection of their daily salads… on a plate. If this isn’t for you, however, they also have some pretty great open sandwich options (#chickenANDbacon). If all of this wasn’t enough, Superette serves their food on what are quite possibly the best plates in the world.
