There is a new kid on the health block called Cold Press. They have opened up this week in the Cape Quarter, right across from the new Vida and next to the Spar.
They serve delicious cold pressed, pre-made juices which are bottled and ready to go, smoothies and all sorts of deliciousness for breakfast and lunch. Their service is quick and really friendly with everything just as available ‘to-go’ as it is to ‘sit-in’. There is such a great street café type vibe to this place, so even if you are running late and were planning on getting something to go, odds are you will want to linger a bit (it’s ok, just blame the traffic).
If you have even the smallest sense of humor then their menu choices like “Pop My Berry”, “The Gun Show” (two tickets to the Gun Show please), and a delicious warm porridge breakfast called “Cocobanana” will be sure to make you chuckle. I can personally tell you that these are amazing, because I have tried them.
“Pop My Berry” is a juice combination of strawberry, green apple and coconut water which makes it the perfect drink post hot yoga session, or anytime you need to replace some electrolytes. “The Gun Show” was decided to be the best choice on the menu by my gym-rat/ part-time rugby enthusiast of a boyfriend (funny that), but whether it was the name or the promise of whey protein (boet) and peanut butter, he loved it. “Cocobanana” was basically a bowl of delicious: banana oats made with coconut milk and almond butter topped with raw cacao nibs, blueberries and honey. For a cold, rainy winter’s morning in Cape Town it could not have been better if it hadn’t been served in a pretty wooden bowl (I mean who does that). Not only is the menu just a little bit witty; their food options are as delicious as they are nutritionally balanced. You can supercharge your order with a choice of superfood options that would make Wellness Warehouse proud (extra chia seeds are equivalent to brownie points in my book). The salads are delicious, and the sandwhiches look great and are made on 60% rye. This is one healthy hotspot that is definitely worth a try if you are in the Greenpoint area, although, quite honestly it’s worth the drive there even if you aren’t.
Where: Cold Press is in Cape Quarter on Somerset Road.
Expensive? Not too bad. Health food is notorious for not being cheap but this place really has the good stuff.
What time do they open: They open early, 7AM- 6PM, so are pretty perfect for a quick, early, healthy breakfast.
Go there for: breakfast, lunch, coffee, juices and smoothies
Take-away or sit down?: There is a great vibe there, so great if you have the time to, otherwise, their take-away packaging makes that an easy option too.
On a scale of “one“- “go there”: I would say get in your car right now.
